makes saying goodbye

BOSTON TOWNSHIP

The township minutes are posted on our website at www.bostontownship.org and outside the fiscal office at the Boston Township Hall. Trustee meetings are the second and fourth Wednesday of the month. Zoning commission meets the second Tuesday of the month and the Board of Zoning Appeals meets the fourth Wednesday of the month.

Condolences: The trustees express condolences to the family of former Peninsula Village council-member Mary Booth who passed away June 2, 2019. Mary served on Peninsula Village Council for many years, resigning at the April council meeting. We extend our deepest sympathies to her immediate and extended family and to her many friends.

Road Department: The village and the township road departments continue to collaborate on road projects. Peninsula`s road department personnel has been working out of the Boston Township road garage since January. After reviewing their needs and goals, Peninsula Village`s solicitor submitted a "scope of services" to the township trustees who reviewed it for the first time at the meeting on June 12. The scope of services is based on the Village eliminating its Service Department and contracting with the township for all tasks currently being conducted by the village. Talks will continue on this issue to see if an agreement can be reached that is mutually beneficial to both communities.

Zoning Updates: The Zoning Commission continues to work with Mark Majewski of NorthStar Planning regarding text amendments to the Business Corridor. The most recent draft was reviewed by the Summit County Planning Commission at a hearing scheduled for May 30. The Summit County Planning Commission made some recommendations for the Zoning Commission to consider. After that review, hearings can be scheduled for both the Zoning Commission and the Boston Township Trustees to review the revisions and receive public comment. At the meeting held May 29, Zoning Commission member Don Beal was reappointed to a five-year term expiring September 4, 2024.

Memorial Day: Our thanks to all who participated in the Memorial Day Parade. Special thanks to Jerry Ritch for planning and acting as master of ceremonies, Walter Beavin and Father John Terzano for blessings and prayers, Nick Janigan for the use of the Boston Community Church property and his mom, Jessica Nagy, for cooking the hot dogs and providing tons of homemade baked goods, Northampton United Methodist Church for providing the hot dogs, the absolutely wonderful Woodridge High School Band, Debora Roznovsky, and to the cemetery workers: Dave Krusinski, Rick Butler, Cal Krusinski, and Kyle Schneider. Despite the weather, the cemeteries never looked better. Thank you to Peninsula Councilmembers Dee Holody and Dan Schneider for attending the ceremony in Boston.

Tag Sale: Boston Township will hold a tag sale at the township garage, 1775 Main Street, Peninsula, on Saturday, July 6, 2019 from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Available for purchase will be Township property that is no longer needed for public use, is obsolete or is unfit for the use for which it was acquired. All sales are final. Cash only. Proceeds from the sale will benefit the General Fund.

WEBSITE: Visit our Website at www.bostontownship.org to find up-to-date Township information. Contact numbers for the Trustees: Amy Anderson: 330-657-2439, Randy Bergdorf: 330-655-5698, and Bill Clifton: 330-657-4032. Fiscal Officer: Catherine Anson at 330-657-2059; Road Department: Dave Krusinski at 330-657-2600; and Zoning Inspector: John Schneider at 330-657-2601 or 234-900-9145.

PENINSULA MIX

Susie Lipchek shared the following memory of Lily Fleder:

In 1976, for the Bicentennial, my parents Tom and Dorothy Strok of Bedford were involved with a week long exchange with the Duke and Duchess of Bedford, England.

My mom thought a special day would be to come to Peninsula and see our historical buildings, ending with a "tea" at my house. The mayor and other city officials would also be coming from Bedford with the Duke and Duchess.

I thought the G.A.R. might be one of our stops. Even though Bob Hunker was happy to be part of the festivities, when I asked about the G.A.R. Hall, he declined, mentioning insurance reasons, etc. Somehow… Lily heard of my disappointment and said she would take care of it.

Much to my surprise, Lily phoned me within days and said Mr. Hunker said no problem after all, and was also ending his day at my tea.

I had only lived in Peninsula for one year and had known Lily for six months, but that was just how Lily was. Always wanting to solve problems and make people happy.

It was a wonderful day in Peninsula. I was proud of my new town, and still am, after forty-four years.

Amy Anderson

PENINSULA LIBRARY NEWS

The first phase of the Peninsula Library`s renovation project is getting close to completion! The first phase includes a total rebuilding of the library`s restrooms, adding a LOT of new storage in the kitchen and installing a counter for staff to use for lunch, and renovating the former original office area into a space to handle the packing and unpacking of the nearly 60,000 items per year which make up the library`s inter-library loans. While a little behind schedule, once that phase is completed, the project will shift to the construction of a new front entrance and vestibule. The original open-roofed area by the front door will be enclosed and become part of the library building.

During the course of these renovations, we have been generously granted permission by the Boston Township Trustees to move our programs to the Trustees` meeting room on the lower level of the Township Hall (1775 Main Street, on the northeast corner of Riverview and Rt. 303). There are a few instances where a library program falls on a time when the township will be using their room for a meeting. The library has arranged in those few instances to use the smaller meeting room upstairs which is managed by the Boston Township Hall Committee. If you have any doubt about where a program or meeting will be held, please contact the library at (330) 657-2665.

There are still many opportunities to make a financial contribution to this renovation project which will cost approximately $250,000. If you would like to contribute to the project, please contact Library Director Randy Bergdorf for more information.

Around the world with The Graf Zeppelin Presented by the Lighter-Than-Air Society
Monday, June 24, 7:00PM

Ninety years ago, the German passenger airship named for the zeppelin`s inventor embarked on an ambitious flight that generated headlines around the globe. Visiting Europe, Japan, and the United States, the zeppelin`s successful journey across Asia and two oceans foreshadowed a new era in air transport, one that ended abruptly with the crash of the airship Hindenburg less than eight years later. This presentation from The Lighter-Than-Air Society will highlight the record-setting 1929 `round-the-world flight and recall the famous airship`s visit to Akron in 1933.

VILLAGE OF PENINSULA PARTICIPATION IN XTINGUISH FESTIVAL

As a part of the Xtinguish Event to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the last burning of the Cuyahoga River, Peninsula was one of three sites selected for a public installation of a Blue Heron created by sculptor Michael Marris. The dedication of this statue took place after the symbolic torch, which followed the path of the Cuyahoga River, passed through Peninsula on Friday, June 21.

The Blue Heron was dedicated to all past, present, and future persons who have enjoyed, loved, and supported Peninsula, a village created along the Cuyahoga River, as Ronda Russell, former owner of the Downtown Emporium did. The Blue Heron is located directly in front of the Trail Mix Store in Peninsula.

Other activities that occurred during the Festival included Remembrance Day from 1:00PM to 4:00PM where there were costumed interpreters along the Towpath sharing the history of the early citizens of the Valley who used the river for their livelihood. There was also music at various sites, which were detailed in ExplorePeninsula.com. An evening concert at the G.A.R. Hall at 8:00PM also took place featuring the music of Tom Burge, Marti Jones and Don Dixon.

The weekend of June 21-23 also included an exhibit at the Log Cabin Gallery entitled Water Spirit. This exhibit featured the work of 20 plus local artists, which were listed at thelogcabingallery.com. Also at the gallery on Saturday were musicians celebrating the Rebirth of the Cuyahoga River with their native American instruments.

Thanks to the Peninsula Chamber of Commerce and the many supporters and contributors who made this special weekend possible. How fortunate we are that we live in a community where we want to celebrate the uniqueness, fun, and history that is Peninsula!
