It does not take
a majority to prevail… but rather an irate,
tireless minority, keen
on setting brushfires
of freedom in
the minds of men.

BOSTON TOWNSHIP

The Boston Township minutes are posted on our website at www.bostontownship.organd outside the office of the Fiscal Officer in the Boston Township Hall. Our meetings are not currently being covered by The West Side Leader.

Zoning Update: Although we have had no contact with builders of data centers, the township enacted a six-month moratorium regarding them on July 8. To contact Zoning Inspector Ruben Miller, please leave a message at (330) 657-2601. Also, until further notice, the Zoning Commission will be having a work session at 5:30PM, prior to their regular meeting, on the second Tuesdays of each month. They are working with zoning consultant Fred Guerra on revisions to the resolution

Road Department: Part-time employee Sebastian Graham has been elevated to the position of Road Superintendent. Please join us in welcoming him to this new position. The township purchased a pre-owned hot box, used for keeping road patching material hot, and it has been used extensively in recent days on Wetmore Road. Brush chipping is scheduled for the first Monday of the month (weather permitting), but due to our staffing level, every home may not get picked up all on the same day. When cleaning up your yard, place cut ends toward the road. Please, no dirt balls, no foreign materials such as lumber, nails, or any type of wire. This service is for limb trimming and storm clean-up. It is not for full tree removal. Please remember that it is the responsibility of the property owner to keep the ditch free of any material that can restrict the flow of storm water.

Downed Trees: Recently, we have been experiencing multiple occasions of fallen trees, some storm-related and a few just random. The trustees would like to thank Tony Chiancone from the Boston Mills Road County Engineer station for the work done by his crew to stay on top of the fallen trees. As a result of storms, there were trees down on Truxell, Everett, Columbia, and Boston Mills roads. A tree along Riverview Road fell over all on its own. If you should come across a tree that has fallen onto the roadway, please report it via the police department. They will then notify the appropriate road crew to handle the debris.

WEBSITE: Visit our Website at www.bostontownship.org to find up–to–date Township information. Contact numbers for the trustees: Amy Anderson: 330–657–2439, Randy Bergdorf: 330–655–5698, and Mike Anderson: 330–523–8802: 330–657–4032. Fiscal Officer: Pam Schneider at 330–657–2059; Road Department: at 330–657–2600; and Zoning: Ruben Miller at 234–900–9145 or 330–657–2601.

VILLAGE UPDATES

June 23, 2026, Special Council Meeting

A big thank you to everyone who came to the meeting. Whether you participated in the discussion or were there just to listen, your presence was appreciated. Also, a thank you to all those who were unable to attend but reached out to me with questions and comments.

After the meeting, the question I heard repeatedly was about the reported income the Village received in 2025 from short-term rentals. Moe Riggins has reported, from information provided by the Fiscal Officer, that it was $20K. Amy Frank-Hensley reported in the meeting, from information provided by "administration," that it was $30K. At the July 14 meeting I posed the question directly to our Fiscal Officer, and she stated it was $18,872.00 for 2025, approximately 1% of our budget.

Ohio Edison

Outages continue, and we continue to work with Ohio Edison. On July 2, the mayor, road crew, and Ohio Edison representatives inspected the lines on Stine Road. Another inspection is scheduled for August 7, and CVNP representatives have been asked to attend, as they are stakeholders in property on Stine Road. A recently received report from Ohio Edison of all outages and causes from 1/1/2025 through July 11, 2026, showed twelve outages. Causes included five animals, five trees (on or off the right-of-way), one damage from a garbage truck, and one failed arrestor. Updates will continue as they become available.

BZA

At the July 11, 2026, Council meeting, William Cole and Sara Leffler were appointed to fill the two vacancies on the Board of Zoning Appeals. Congratulations!

Respectfully,

Jodi Padrutt

To the Editors:

This letter is my view on village happenings and does not represent the council as a whole.

Last month I wrote an article about wanting to build camaraderie within our village, but it has become disappointingly obvious that not everyone feels that way.

The original goal of the special meeting, as I and others understood it, was to gauge the interest of residents to simply put the short-term rental issue on the November ballot, and finally get an accurate count on how our people feel about having them in our neighborhoods. Instead, it seemed to encourage a feeling of division across our community and totally discounted the privacy of our residents, and worse.

Case in point, the notorious anonymous blue letter. Although I did not write this letter, I having read it, found nothing untruthful about it. But, instead of the topic being discussed, the unknown writer was attacked for not being transparent and somehow also sneaky, and even further, others were called ugly names such as fearmongers, for mentioning past tragedies involving short-term rentals right next-door to our village.

This is exactly why so many citizens are reluctant to report any problems having to do with STRs.

So yes, I believe that putting this issue on the November ballot is the only real way to get a true read on how our residents feel about having STRs right within our neighborhoods, not some straw poll involving a show of hands, with the very real possibility of intimidation from those who disagree. Just the absolute right of each citizen to have a private and accurate tally of their desires.

Thank you.

Respectfully,

Moe Riggins

To the editors:

I would like to take a moment to recognize the simple bridge makeover that occurred recently to beautify our downtown area.

From what I have heard, I believe the Garden Club has been attempting to get the Village and/or State to take accountability for the cleanup that was needed.

It was no surprise to see two ladies with paint trays and rollers in hand tackling the job in two evenings of work. I believe it was Dee Holoday and Natalie Mitchell (forgive me if I am wrong.)

Thank you for taking the initiative and getting the job done. It is a huge improvement. That bridge takes a beating from the traffic and weather, and the women wanted a better look for our town. This falls in line with the rest of the work these women (and our Garden Club) do in this area which includes painting the guardrail in the past, seasonal decorations, and a neatly maintained memory garden at the northwest end.

Thank you for taking pride in our village.

Denise Lahoski

Remember all the laughter
We shared throughout the years.
Now that I am content
That my life it was worthwhile
Knowing I passed along the way
A very happy smile.
When you are all alone
And I may cross your mind
Know that I walk in your footsteps
Half a step behind.
Please do not be unhappy
Because I am out of sight.
Remember I am always with you
