BOSTON TOWNSHIP

SEWER PROJECT: As reported in the July issue of YCN the Trustees had until August 9th to agree to partner in a JEDZ agreement with Cuyahoga Falls in order to receive funding for the design of a sanitary sewer on Season’s Road in Cuyahoga Falls going north to Suncrest Gardens. Funding would be from Cuyahoga Falls, a block grant, with the balance coming from the Department of Environmental Services. As stated previously the agreement includes the approval of a master zoning plan which at the present time has not been created. The Trustees have not been included in discussions between Hudson, Stow and Cuyahoga Falls with regards to the JEDZ. Cuyahoga Falls is quick to respond that Boston Township has not contributed any funding for the JEDZ or the sewer design. What they neglect to tell you is that since the first income tax collection in October 2006 Cuyahoga Falls has the benefit of over $337,000 in income tax revenue that has be generated in the current JEDD agreement. None of these funds have been used by Cuyahoga Falls for the benefit of the JEDD area. Throughout the JEDD collection period the JEDD agreement allowed for a 3% collection fee. The collection fee had not been instituted until February 2011 allowing Cuyahoga Falls to collect and additional $1,503. As a contingency of accepting the JEDZ agreement the Trustees asked that the 3% fee be removed. As of the September 14th Trustee meeting the fee was still being collected.

SENIOR SNOW PLOWING: The Trustees will once again be offering this service. If you were on the list last year you will automatically receive an application. If you are new to the program please call Amy at 657-2439 and an application will be sent to you. Senior Snowplowing is NOT paid for through a grant. It is part of our general fund.

PENINSULA COUNCIL

The Peninsula Village Council held a special meeting on July 25th to discuss placing a Village Income Tax increase on the November ballot. After a discussion on the state of the Village's budget and their needs and especially in light of the severe cuts from the State, all Council members present agreed to put it before the voters. An increase in the Village's municipal income tax from 1% to 2% will be presented to the residents at the election to be held on November 8th. Council plans on holding several public meetings to discuss the proposal with the citizens. These sessions will be scheduled at the next regular Council meeting on September 12th.

Council held their regular meeting on August 8th. Daniel Moledor was recognized for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout and for his contributions to the Village of Peninsula and the community at large.

A report was given on the damage from the flooding in July. Although FEMA did not declare the Valley to be a disaster area, insurance will cover most of the damage.

There was much discussion concerning the Player's Barn. Mayor Fisher tried to clear up many of the misconceptions concerning the property and the state of disrepair of the structure. Council Person Mary Booth will continue in her efforts to set up a not for profit organization in order to accept donations to see if anything can be done with the Barn.

Health care for the full time Village employees was discussed. The Village's insurance representative will be invited to the next regular meeting to explain some ways in which the Village could save money on their premium payments.

Check the Library, Post Office, Village Hall, and Terry Lumber for posting of Village minutes.

PEDDLER’S DAY

Peddler’s Day is October 1, 2011. Please contact Mary Booth, 330-657-2244, to get your name and sale location on the Peddler’s Day Map. When you see Nina this year, please be sure to tip your hat. Nina is not sure when she organized the first Peninsula Garage Sale Day at the behest of then Mayor Dick Fisher and Councilwoman Carol Wright, but it has been “about 30 years ago now”. She does know that 12 years ago she re-named it Peninsula Peddler’s Day. It has since grown to an endearing annual event. Throughout these years, Nina carried the torch for us peddlers, organized us, paid the advertising, and made the map. We have had a lot of fun, sold some stuff, and literally created village traditions around this day. Some say they love it more than Thanksgiving (you know who you are!). Nina says she is retiring from Peddler’s Day, so just in case she means it: THANK YOU, NINA! And Wayne, thank you too!

PENINSULA UNITED METHODIST MISSIONS COMMITTEE

The Peninsula United Methodist Mission Committee would like to thank Judge for his contribution to our recent mission trip to Pittsburgh. Our group consisted of 15 hardy souls: women and men, young and older, some from PUMC and some from outside the church. We slept in the downstairs classrooms of Saint Paul’s Methodist church in Pittsburgh. They were wonderfully hospitable to us during our weekend stay. The focus of our trip was to work with an organization called The Pittsburgh Project. They are a faith based group centered in the urban north Pittsburgh area. They do extensive teaching and intern work for young people from within the area as well as drawing from throughout the country. They reclaim abandoned land for gardens, bring back ruined swimming pools, and work on 30-40 houses a day so elderly residents can keep their homes. Our group worked in a reclaimed baseball field reused as an organic garden. We mowed, weeded, were rained on, dug ground for planting, salvaged seeds, weeded some more, were dripping with sweat, and had a great time. We thank our former minister, Reverend Jan Munsey for reintroducing mission work to this church and know it will continue thanks to the strong support of our new Pastor Derek Kubilus.

Thanks once again to our friend Judge for his very generous donation to a very successful trip.

Loretta Harland and Dave Shankland

To the Editors:

I thought I’ve seen everything until Mayor Fisher publicly humiliated our “citizen of the year” and committed conservationist, Lily Fleder. By surprise to everyone at last month’s Council meeting, including Councilperson Holody herself, Mayor Fisher read an email in a public meeting that was sent by Ms. Fleder to Councilperson Holody’s “personal” email address. It was not addressed to the Mayor, but he claims that he found a copy of the email on his desk, in a secure area of City Hall, but did not know how it got there. And if he did find it randomly on his desk, why would he read it aloud in public before addressing it personally with an octogenarian Peninsula resident?

The damage was done before any of us came out of the shock over what had just happened. The topic of the email, the Players Barn, had lost its’ significance as attendees could only extend their empathy to Ms. Fleder as she stammered to respond. There were better ways for the Mayor to make his point in defense of his position on the Players Barn than to embarrass a pillar in the community.

It was an embarrassing gesture to attendees and the community that public officials would endorse this disrespectful display of unprofessionalism in a public forum against a lifelong community contributor. And why? Because she’s trying to salvage a historical building for the community?

Public humiliation and unfounded accusations have played a major part in this administration’s “absolute power” agenda. To this point they have lost a lawsuit to our ex police chief for wrongful dismissal; conducted a witch hunt on a “green” planning commission member; lost at two trips to the voting booth attempting to write a new Village charter; lost an attempt to reduce zoning requirements from 4 to 2 acres; and wrote strict penalties and rules for video recording public meetings. Can we think of better ways to focus our attention?

Attendees of council meetings and public hearings have witnessed five council people, a mayor and Village solicitor pointing at each other to avoid direct answers. In the meantime our zoning is being dismantled, our rights are being restricted, and residents are being insulted. So Lily, please accept my heartfelt compassion for the indignity you were served by the Mayor, and stay with us on your mission to preserve the historic assets of the Village.

To the Residents of the Village of Peninsula and Boston Township:

As many of you are aware, I am running for the position of Mayor for the Village of Peninsula. With the election approaching, I’ve been informed that there is some concern regarding my health. I would like to reassure everyone that I am in fine physical condition and am fit to perform the duties of Mayor, along with my responsibilities as Assistant Road Superintendent for Boston Township. My guess is that some residents may be confusing me with other members of my family. Your prayers for them would be greatly appreciated.

I look forward to meeting the residents of our community as my campaign progresses. Thank you.

PENINSULA MIX

Here's our big day to get rid of some accumulated stuff and make some money besides! Peddler’s Day is Saturday, October 1, from 10 to 5 pm. There are special lots available at the Methodist Church, and Peninsula Garden Club will hold forth as usual at the Spencer/Conger house on Main Street. Sales will be taking place all up and down Main Street and throughout the Village. For further information, call Mary Booth at 330-657-2244. Putting a sign out in front on your road, will help people to find you. . . . . .

Ever hear of the "Edifice Complex"? This is an architectural term from the internet which is defined as “the tendency of male politicians to have large buildings and stadiums built as a reminder of their legacy." Well, that's ok I guess, just so they don't destroy historic structures in the process to fulfill that wish. . . . . Speaking of historic structures, the Peninsula Players Barn has recently reached the status of "antique" or Historic because it was built in 1910, so the hundred year mark should qualify it for some level of funding from Washington. Council Person, Mary Booth has done the necessary ground work to bring this about. Saturday mornings during this cooler weather will bring volunteers to help trim up the grounds. Those wishing to help should call 330-657- 2394. In the same spirit, please let us have photo copies of any old photos, play programs you might have about from the activities which took place at the Barn. . . . . .

A good low-growing ground cover is: Western, or North American Wild Ginger which grows wild right around us here, is also known as ASARUM, and makes a good, low-growing groundcover for shady or northern exposed areas. Judy Lahoski let me have a start from her patch. It spreads readily and has an unusual three- cornered purple flower, but please do note that the FDA warns against consuming the root of this plant. There are nurseries that carry it, but it is expensive.

Lily Fleder
