BOSTON TOWNSHIP

ZONING CHANGES: Financial problems continue to be an issue for the township. For this reason the trustees, in a 2-1 vote, added the duties of zoning inspector to the position of assistant road superintendent. The trustees thanked Larry Sulzer for his contribution and hard work a zoning inspector.

SENIOR WATCH: In conjunction with the Peninsula Police Department a Senior Watch Program has been implemented. This will be done on a strictly voluntary basis and will be open to anyone living in their home alone. Contact one of the trustees for an application.

HINES HILL PAVING: Melway paving has just about completed the Hines Hill road Project.

PENINSULA VILLAGE

The Village of Peninsula Council met in regular session on September 8, 2014. Mayor Mayer awarded Officer Elizabeth Mettler a commendation for her efforts performing lifesaving actions on August 17, 2014. Representatives from Summit County presented information to members about the sales tax increase and asked for Council’s approval of legislation to support the effort. Charles Hawk of the Regional Income Tax Agency (RITA) presented a proposal for municipal income tax collection services. Several residents attended the meeting to express their concerns with the proposed Bow Hunting legislation. Sponsor Councilman Schall, after taking into consideration the comments, withdrew the legislation. He said he may introduce it sometime in the future with the residents’ concerns to be addressed.

Mayor Mayer announced that the October Council meeting will be on Tuesday, October 14th due to the Columbus Day Holiday. Chief Varga explained the proposed Senior Watch program. Information and applications may be found on the Village’s website or may be picked up at the Village Hall.

Council approved the legislation supporting the Summit County sales tax increase, the Senior Watch Program and a Police Taser Policy.

VALLEY FIRE

The Valley Fire District Board of Trustees hired Lori Shields as their new clerk.

The district is the recipient of a FEMA grant that will allow the replacement of all of the existing fire hoses.

PENINSULA FOUNDATION

The Foundation is hosting a traveling exhibit from the National Library of Medicine in at the G.A.R. Hall in October. The exhibit, Life & Limb: The Toll of the American Civil War, will be open Wednesdays through Saturdays from October 8 through October 25 (except 10/18). The Peninsula Foundation in cooperation with The Peninsula Area Chamber of Commerce, has again attained a grant from the Ohio Arts Council. The grant money will be used to sponsor music related workshops, and to cover related expenses to the evening event featuring Dom Flemons, formerly of the Carolina Chocolate Drops.

We are looking for Sponsorships for this event. A sponsorship consists of a $100.00 donation to sponsor a band for two hours on a porch. This is a great way for service-oriented businesses, or families and friends to support the arts by sponsoring a musician on designated porches throughout the Village.

Rent a porch for $100.00 for two hour and you will get the following
• Listing on the program
• Listing on website and social media
• Signage (within reason and with permission at the location…example…this music brought to you by….

We are also reaching out to you, the community, for volunteers. Volunteer opportunities include:
• Monitoring designated porches

COPS NEED FRIDGE AND MICROWAVE

The police department is looking for a good working, used mid-size fridge (larger than dorm) and a medium-full size microwave for the station (big enough to warm up a cup of coffee or plate of leftovers). Our budget doesn't allow us to use funds for a nonessential item like a fridge or microwave, so anyone in the community who has one that they are not using, would be greatly appreciated! HALLOWEEN FESTIVITIES

All residents of Peninsula and Boston Township are invited to participate in the Friday, October 31st trick or treat, trunk or treat, party at the school, and the annual costume contest.

New this year: trunk or treat which will be held at the school parking lot for residents who live in the outskirts of town. This event is in addition to the trick or treat. Tents are welcome. Call the Village Hall for information and reserve a spot, 330-657-2151.

BOSTON TOWNSHIP’S MONUMENT MEN

Next April we mark the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War and what was once Decoration Day in May. That holiday eventually became what we now call Memorial Day. Also, in 2015 it will be 70 years since WWII ended.

Back in 1889 a crowd of 2,000 came to dedicate a monument to men who served their country from 1861 to 1865. It remained in front of the GAR Hall until all those veterans of the Grand Army of the Republic had passed on. It was moved to Cedar Grove Cemetery in 1932. The Hall became an American Legion Post and, at some point, a plaque honoring those who served in WWII was put on a boulder in front. When the building was saved from certain destruction and returned to being a GAR Hall-- one of only two in all of Ohio—the plaque went elsewhere.

If you have never visited Boston Cemetery it’s not likely you’ve seen what happened to that list of veterans. If you have, perhaps you know one or more of the many names on it, or even have a story about one of the six men marked by a star. If you do, please share it with the Village Observer.

As for that statue Colonel Conger gave us? If you check the 148 names listed there, some will sound familiar enough. Stories collected by Bob and Jeanette Bishop are familiar to many. Now comes a story involving one of our Monument Men that deserves to be celebrated. It’s not everyday something ‘new’ happens about Peninsula’s past, so don’t miss historian Dean Smith’s talk on General Phil Sheridan at the Peninsula Library & Historical Society, 7PM on October 20.

Civil War Talk: General Sheridan, October 20 at 7:00 PM Dean Smith, historian, will give a talk on Ohio General Phil Sheridan on Monday, October 20th at 7:00 PM at the Peninsula Library. General Sheridan was very controversial, but ended as a three star general and head of the U.S. Army after the war. He served on the Western front and then moved to the Virginia campaign with General U.S. Grant. His battles in the Shenandoah Valley and at Appomattox were very successful.

MRS. P`S BAKERY

Karen & Ken Frankenbery started looking to make a move from their Medina home in 2005. Ken is an avid runner/ biker, and was constantly spending so much time in the Cuyahoga National Park area, running on the towpath & bike riding on the area roads, they wanted to be closer to the park. A year of looking was getting us nowhere, and in 2006, after leaving the Towpath marathon, we noticed a small for sale sign on a Stine Road. Home. We were able to purchase the home, did a complete renovation, and have been super happy living in Peninsula.

Karen has been eating Gluten Free for years, like many people, she had always had stomach issues, but doctors were unable to diagnose the problem. A friend gave her a book about eating gluten free. It made a huge difference in her health and she found out how many products have wheat in them, and how hard it was to find good tasting gluten free products. When she started buying products from Mrs. P’s Bakery, she was in love with their products. Great taste, locally owned, it was perfect. When she found out the owner was selling the business because of health issues- Karen was just getting out of the restaurant business so the timing was perfect. Karen took over the bakery and found out even people who are not allergic to wheat love her products, and have found avoiding wheat is healthier for many people.

Mrs. Ps is located at 28 Center Rd in Bedford, just minutes from I-271, so just 20 minutes from Peninsula. Karen and her small staff make several varieties of bread, cakes, cup cakes, cookies, pizza crusts and much more. To the Editors:

In regard to Missing Girl In Park. . . I used to Hike deep In Woods, alone. . However, as more people came to Park. . I realized it was only a matter of Time before it also attracted an element of those searching out Women alone.

I now only WALK In Down Town area where if I scream. . I can be heard.

However recently when My Son visited & grandson . .we went into Desolate areas & I was amazed by Number of Girls riding or walking alone there.

No one Should go to these areas Without A Buddy! If you do. . You are inviting an encounter!

I know this has been bad PR for the CVNP – But I was stunned when after a week of searching. . . I heard Ms. Park ranger on the News, stating that in all liklehood. . . The Girl was probably no longer In the Park. . That She may have just visited it & left!

Oh, & left Her car to be Towed? That statement made no sense! She met Foul play In the CVNP & their PR Should Warn Hikers/Bikers to have a Buddy System & Park Rangers Should patrol Desolate areas!
