THE END OF AN ERA

ALT NAME
Elaine Lee (1953-2022)

Much of the world has been talking about the end of an era with the passing of the Queen of England. Boston Township recently experienced the end of an era which has received much less attention. When Elaine Lee from Oak Hill Road passed away on July 1, she was the last from the Lee family still residing on Oak Hill. The Oak Hill name does not apply only to the road, but also to the entire section of Boston Township along Major, Oak Hill and Scobie roads and was once the location of large farms dating back to the original settlers. The Lee family arrived on Oak Hill in 1842. Of the very early families with the last names of Viall, Welton/Hunt, Scobie/Lindley, Ozmun/Bell, Gilson/Lee, Mackey and Vowels, Elaine Lee was also the last member of all those families who was still living on Oak Hill.

To the Editors:

Communication creates community. A small group of Peninsula citizens (Positively Peninsula) have been meeting for the past five months to better understand and influence the critical issues facing our village: sewer and economic viability. Our approach has included meeting with local officials and community partners. We have learned that decisions are being made that will impact our cost of living and have the potential to drastically change our community. We have concerns about some of the information we have gathered and now seek to improve communication for all residents and business owners. We believe informed citizens, given the option to proactively participate, will create better outcomes for public sewer and economic development. We are sharing what we have learned via our blog and we are planning additional outreach. We invite you to learn more here: https://positivelypeninsula.blogspot.com/

To the Editors:

My husband and I moved to Peninsula just over three years ago because we love being able to walk from our house to both the towpath and the Boston Run trail for daily hikes. I am very concerned about the town`s plan to build a sewage treatment plant at the end of Locust Street where it will sit on the road that leads to a most beautiful, natural trail. For many reasons this doesn`t seem like a good location. Will hikers want to go to that trail? Will we be able to? Just as alarming is the pump station planned for the bottom of Canal Street. Again, this is a path we, and many other townspeople and visitors, use every day.

Will it be loud? Smelly? Hidden? How intrusive will a pump station be to the natural experience of being in the park? How will the waste material be piped across the river?

I think that the village council isn`t concerned with the citizens questions. I think they will say that the decisions are made. When will they tell us how much this will cost each homeowner? We will be paying to have our septic tanks removed as well as monthly sewer charges, which are ever increasing in Summit County.

When we moved here, we bought a house that we could afford, knowing that we would need to add in septic maintenance. Now it seems that our fundamental experience of the park will be changed, and we will be paying more money for a change that we don`t necessarily want.

I know we need to do something to prevent contamination of the river, but I want to know if other options are available for different locations of sewage treatment or pump stations. I also would like the village to consider improved septic and hybrid systems.

NEWS FROM MAIN STREET PENINSULA

As explained in the May YCN, Peninsula is now a Main Street Community. As a part of this program, an important element is Design and this involves creating a sense of place, way finding, and how the community looks and feels. With the help of all area residents, we want to get involved in a program that provides free benches to be placed around designated areas for more seating. This program is called Nex-Trex and is a plastic recycling program. We are challenged with coming up with 500 pounds of plastic material over a 6 month collection period. Here is where your help is critical. Items to be recycled include grocery bags, bread bags, bubble wrap, dry cleaning bags, newspaper sleeves, ice bags, plastic shipping envelopes, Ziploc bags, cereal bags, pallet wrap and stretch film, wooden pallet bags, and produce bags. All plastic needs to be clean and does not include water bottles. The Main Street Committee thought this is a very doable community project and so we are requesting your help. At this point we are waiting on the Collection Bins which will be placed at Terry Lumber, The Peninsula Road Garage next to Terry Lumber, and the former DMT Garage on the corner of Locust and Main Street. In the meantime, if households could starting collecting the materials above now, that would be wonderful. We will get the word out when the bins are in place.

A special thanks to the North Hampton Rotary for already donating 500 pounds of recyclable materials for a bench. Please help us get the next 500 pounds because you can get 2 benches a year.

Thanks so much for your help.
