NORTHAMPTON/CUYAHOGA VALLEY ROTARY NEWS

Congratulations to Nathaniel Lahoski, Woodridge Middle School Eighth grader, for being selected as the Rotary Student of the Month for the first quarter of the school year. Nathaniel was selected by the eighth-grade teachers because "he consistently demonstrates integrity, impartiality, and concern for others; as well as being involved in school, community, and family."

Nathaniel was invited to the November Rotary Club meeting where principal Jesse Hosford described Nathaniel as a role model for other Woodridge students. The Rotary presented a check for $50 in Nathaniel`s name to a charity of his choice; in which he requested the donation to go to the Boys and Girls Club of Northeast Ohio. Nathaniel selected this charity as it provides a safe environment for kids to spend time and is led by adult mentors who foster positivity and academic success. This is important to Nathaniel, as he has always had great role models and mentors through after school activities at Woodridge and Woodridge Recreation. Nathaniel is the son of Terry and Denise Lahoski and grandson of Judy and the late John Lahoski. Congratulations Nathaniel.

BOSTON TOWNSHIP

The Township minutes are posted on our website at www.bostontownship.org and outside the fiscal office at the Boston Township Hall. Meetings are not covered by the West Side Leader.

Zoning Update: Revisions to the zoning ordinance regarding signage were approved by the Zoning Commission at a hearing on December 10. The proposed changes were sent to the Summit County Planning Commission for their review on January 23. The prior revisions regarding home occupations, etc. are being integrated into the full ordinance which will be reprinted and posted to the township website.

Road Department: The township replaced the 2009 Colorado pick-up with a 2025 Ridgeline pick-up. After sixteen years, the old truck was cost-prohibitive to keep in service. The new truck will soon be equipped with light bars and township logos.

Condolences: The trustees express condolences to the family of former township trustee Clara Muldowney. Clara served on the township zoning board before being appointed township trustee upon the death of Richard Humphrey. Clara served for about two years until the park acquired her home.

Get Well Wishes: The trustees send get well wishes to former township trustee and current Board of Zoning Appeals member Jerry Ritch as he recovers from a planned surgery.

Share-a-Christmas: The trustees thank all who helped with this event. Be sure to see the full article elsewhere in this issue.

VILLAGE OF PENINSULA

In 2024, the Village of Peninsula achieved several significant milestones that strengthened its operations and community services, such as:

1. Working on an Area Master Plan that focuses on identifying priority projects, and pointing out potential areas for future investment or redevelopment. The final plan is moving towards a presentation to the Village Planning Commission and Village Council for review and approval.
2. The hiring of officers to fill all six full-time positions on the police department, ensuring a strong and reliable police presence in the community, with the help of our Auxiliary and Reserve officers which step-up daily, to supplement our full-time team. One of those officers, being our new K-9 handler which has enhanced the department`s capabilities, providing specialized skills to support law enforcement, public safety efforts and other communities with the same.
3. The hiring of a much needed second road and maintenance employee to assist our supervisor, that was a one person operation for months.
4. The wastewater project moving forward.

Looking forward to 2025, the Village of Peninsula is looking to build on the successes from 2024 regarding:

1. Completion of the Area Master Plan
2. Renovation of Village Hall
3. Continued progress on the wastewater project.
4. Continuing to support our employees so they can provide needed Village services.
5. And to work with other communities and organizations to make the Village of Peninsula a great place to live and visit.

The Village Hall remodeling has officially begun.

Council has unanimously accepted a bid for the demolition of the Player`s Barn off of route 303. After many years, the property has since become structurally unstable and is now beyond repair. Demolition will occur in the winter of 2025.

Be mindful during the winter season to not plow your snow onto the road or to neighboring properties!

Upcoming Meetings:
Planning Commission Meeting scheduled for January 27, 2025 at 7:00PM.

JANET STAMMEN

Janet Stammen Memorial Duals

Janet Stammen was a Cuyahoga Falls Elementary School teacher and lifetime supporter of Woodridge athletics. Her husband Stan, now retired, coached wrestling and cross-country for over 35 years here at Woodridge High School. During that time Janet never missed a single event with the exception of one wrestling tournament when she was giving birth to their daughter, Shea. Janet was a true and loyal supporter of Woodridge and its athletics and has had a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of knowing her. Her love of teaching was demonstrated by her commitment to every one of her students. Janet passed away in 2002. For Janet`s loyalty and commitment to the Woodridge community and for the influence she had on all who knew her, this tournament is named in her honor.

The above statement was in this year`s program for the Janet Stammen Memorial Duals. Following Janet`s passing on February 16, 2002, wrestling coach, Mike Massey was approached about renaming the Woodridge Invitational to honor Janet. At the same time Mike was asked to change the citizenship award to honor Stan. Mike graciously agreed and it was announced during the winter sports awards. The following January was the first meet honoring Janet and many tears were shed that day. T-shirts were made for each member of the team. They were anonymously given by a 1972 Woodridge graduate.

While her legacy lives on at Woodridge, Janet meant so much to many of us in this community. When Janet asked for help you just agreed without even knowing what she needed. If you attended any of the wrestling meets while she was involved it was filled with her friends in this community helping with the event. Thank you, Mike for continuing to remember Janet.

Deacon Will Yoho (330-657-2631) is available to discuss weddings, baptisms or becoming a Catholic. Office hours are Mondays and Wednesdays from 10:00AM to 2:00PM. For more information on the parish, check out our weekly bulletin at www.motherofsorrowspeninsula. org.

Building: Mother of Sorrows was built in 1882 to provide ministry and worship opportunities for descendants of Irish Catholics who came to Ohio in the 1820s to build the Ohio and Erie canals. Our doors have remained open since then; but now, after 142 years, the church property is in serious need of repair and renovation in order to remain a beautiful landmark and a beacon of love and hope for many generations to come. The estimated cost for necessary updates is $165,000. We will retain the integrity of the structure and property so that it will compliment the image of our small village. Financial help is welcome from the community for this historical church project. Please consider donating to the Building Maintenance, Repair and Renovation Program. No contribution is too large or too small! Checks can be mailed directly to MOS (6034 Locust Street, Peninsula OH 44264) or dropped off at the office Mondays and Wednesdays from 10:00AM to 2:00PM. Every dollar donated will be used exclusively for repairs and renovations so that we can keep our beautiful little church a vibrant part of our Peninsula community. If you have any questions about the project or how you could help, please contact Deacon Yoho (330-657-2631).

Faith & Fiction Book Club continues to meet the second Wednesday of each month at 10:00AM for coffee with book talk beginning at 10:30AM. On February 12 we will be discussing Priest and Beggar by Kevin Wells; and on March 12, we will review The Return of the Prodigal Son by Henri Nouwen. Everyone is welcome! We are made up of parishioners and non-parishioners, men and women, Catholics and non-Catholics.
