MISSIONS TRIP
Peninsula United Methodist Church and Peninsula will be represented again by a mission trip taken by David Shankland to the island of Hispaniola this January. The trip will consist of two weeks in the Dominican Republic and two weeks in Port-Au-Prince Haiti. Each trip will be with a different mission organization. Both contacts were made by PUMC Pastor Derek Kubilus and his association with these groups through 1st United Methodist Church in Cuyahoga Falls. The trip to the Dominican will be with Meeting God in Missions and I will be involved with construction of housing for Haitians who have come to the Dominican to work the sugar cane fields. I will also have the opportunity to teach carving with the hope that people can create local art that can be sold to supplement meager incomes. The two weeks in Haiti will be with the same organization that Loretta Harland and I worked with last year, Functional Literacy Ministry. I will again be teaching art during the day and a more advanced sculpture class to older students after school. FLM is also starting a three year drive to supply the family of each student with a water filter, approximately 100 per year for three years. Housing, teaching marketable skills and providing clean drinking water, these are the reasons I am going. If anyone wishes to contribute towards any of these endeavors there are three options. Checks can be mailed directly to either organization made payable to organization name.
