YCN

JULY 2010 VOLUME 27 NUMBER 7

BOSTON TOWNSHIP

SPEEDY RECOVERY WISHES: After a small set back our clerk, Joanne Noragon, is recovering and back to work. Zoning secretary, Lida Flowers Brandt, is recovering from back surgery and former zoning commission member and zoning secretary, Wes Bergdorf is recovering from surgery. Our prayer and speedy recovery wishes to all.

CONDOLENCES: Donna Kostandaras, wife of County Councilman Nick Kostandaras passed away July 9th at the age of sixty-nine. Donna accompanied Nick on many of his visits to our township meetings and graciously included us in many of their gatherings.

MEETING ROOM: Mark Biro, formerly of Boston Township, is now general contractor in charge of our meeting room renovation. Mark did the construction of the offices in the basement of the old school building. We are pleased to have his excellent workmanship on our project.

TRAFFIC LIGHT: There will be a traffic signal installed by the end of the year at Kendall Park and Akron-Cleveland Roads. Years ago we asked for this signal to be installed and ODOT representatives stated the traffic flow did not indicate the need for a signal. We were given a caution signal instead. With the increase of traffic the traffic signal is warranted.

ROAD REPAIRS: The Hines Hill culvert replacement and Major Road paving project is expected to be completed by the end of July. The Major Road project is being done the full length of the road involving both Richfield and Peninsula. The majority of the funding for both projects has been made possible by the CVNP’s grant for road assistance.

PENINSULA JEDD EXPLORATION: No further meetings have been held exploring this possibility. The township’s next step is rezoning for the properties that will be included in the JEDD.

BICENTENNIAL COMMITTEE: The Bicentennial Committee continues to meet on the third Wednesday of each month at 6:30 in the Township meeting room. Anyone wishing to help is invited.

WEBSITE: Visit our website at www.bostontownship.org to find up to date Township information.

Contact numbers for the trustees: Amy Anderson: 330-657-2439, Randy Bergdorf: 330-655-5698, and Jerry Ritch: 330-657-2015. Fiscal Officer Joanne Noragon: 330-657-2059, Road Department Tim Tesmer and Doug Mayer: 330-657-2600, and Zoning inspector, Larry Sulzer: 330-657-2135.

THANKS, JOANNE

The trustees of the Valley Fire District would like to thank Joanne Noragon for her 4 years of service as clerk. She spent tireless hours carefully managing the finances of the District, successfully working through audits and tightening and improving processes. We wish her continued good health. Thank you!

AROUND THE COMMUNITY

Congratulations to Nick Zamiska on Valley Fire. Nick made the Dean’s List for the spring semester at the University of Akron. Nick is also on Brecksville’s fire department.

Welcome home to DeDe Ritch McGuire. DeDe, husband Mike and daughter Megan recently moved to Boston Township. This move is especially nice because they moved into the home of DeDe’s grandparent’s Al and Evelyn Ritch. DeDe is the daughter of Jerry and Gloria Ritch.

Earlier this month the Akron Beacon Journal ran a story about Jayann Brooks who lives in Cuyahoga Falls and her efforts to raise $3,500 for a memorial bench to be placed at the Ohio Veterans Memorial Park in Clinton that would honor twelve men from Cuyahoga Falls who died in Vietnam. Jayann was assisted by someone dear to my heart, Toni Fazzino Amos. Toni’s brother, Army Corporal James Douglas Fazzino was killed in Vietnam on June 11, 1968. Dougie grew up in Northampton and graduated from Woodridge High School.

Reading over the twelve names I noticed the name of Army PFC. Joseph Ellis Guenther who was twenty-three years old when he was killed on October 7, 1968. A quick check with Kay Guenther told me that Joseph was her husband, Pat’s brother. Joseph had just graduated from Kent State when he was drafted. He served as a medic for just a few months before he was killed. Pat and Kay honored his memory by naming their son Joseph.

Kathleen Varga of Crooked River Herb Farm is selling her jams and vinegars at the Hudson Farmer’s Market each Saturday. Autumn Johnston of Posh Pierogie also has one of the stands. She has a variety of pierogie to eat while you shop or frozen to take home. The smell is heavenly.

I am always reminding our residents to shop locally. Please remember that there are also many service-related businesses in our community. Terry Padrutt has operated Valley Well and Pump since 1978. Terry has bailed me out of more problems than I can count. Please remember him when you need this type of service.

Amy Anderson

ROAD DEPARTMENT THANKS

A big pat on the back to the Boston Township and Peninsula Village Road Departments. Both have done a great job keeping the roadway berms and ditches mowed. All the rain we had this spring made for some tall and thick grass, which both departments did a fine job keeping trimmed. Thanks to them for keep our towns in tip top shape!

PENINSULA MIX

"Kids ta'day!" Is a somewhat disparaging remark that needs updating, according to the response, all Woodridge students, that I got from an ad that I placed in this publication, looking for yard help.

Drake Sulzer, 16, Woodridge junior, son of Larry and Bonnie Sulzer, arrived on time, barrowed and stacked wood at a steady pace for a couple of hours. Turns out he is one of the track stars who led Woodridge to the state championship. Call 330-657-2288.

Jacob Woods, Woodridge freshman, 330-923-2455 has a flyer out that lists his services as lawn cutting, window cleaning (1st level), cleaning, edging, mulching flower beds, cleaning gutters, clearing out garages, raking leaves and washing cars. Then there is Jared Rogers, Woodridge freshman, and grandson of Joe and Theresa Mahan of Major Road. You can reach him at 216-215-2987

These youngsters arrive on time, work hard and steady, ok, steadily, and can give us all the good feeling that our country is in good hands. I recommend them highly.

There was another call from a youngster, but the connection was so poor I could not get a name or phone number. I'm hoping he'll try again.. . . . . John Slocum, son of Richard Slocum and Kathy Bertsch, and a junior at Woodridge, is another steady, hard worker who gets the job done. His phone number is 330-657-2530. Please join me in being proud of "kids ta'day!"

Does anyone out there happen to know if towpath mules had metal horseshoes? I recently came across one that could have been made for a pony, but maybe, just maybe .?

There are great reports about Peninsula Library's plans for a classic movie night. On the Waterfront was well received, and our library staff is interested to hear of special requests from patrons, especially from the list of turner classics. . . . . How about the movie about the Alamo, Jim Bowie, etc.

How is this for a way to help pay for the cost of repair work on Center Street, where a hollowed out hole has developed in the pavement? We could call it a python hole, put up a sign on Main Street, and charge admission to look down into the "python hole."

Lily Fleder

THE HEN HAWK

As I arrived home from work one day I was amazed to see what I thought was a Red Tailed Hawk standing very close to the back of our house on a tree stump. It was obvious that this bird could not fly. I contacted the Medina Rapture Center and a volunteer was dispatched to our house and arrived within 40 minutes. He advised us that this was a male Red Shouldered Hawk and was suffering from a gunshot wound. We were in disbelief because we were told that this bird was shot in the neighborhood he could not have traveled very far in his condition. We were saddened to find out the following day that the bird had to be euthanized the damage too great for it to survive. This bird is also known as the Hen Hawk because they will go after poultry. They are very beneficial to people because they keep pest populations down such as mice, voles, chipmunks and shrews. This bird is protected by State and Federal Laws under The Migratory Bird Treaty Act. State Fines up to one thousand dollars and one hundred and twenty days in jail can be imposed Federal laws are even stricter. The life span of this bird is only two years in the wild, please don’t take your aggression out on these beautiful creatures, they are only doing what comes natural to them, survival.

If you ever need assistance with an injured raptor contact the Medina Raptor Center at 330-667-2386. They also assist with songbirds, ducks, owls and Herons. When there is room they will also take injured squirrels, woodchucks and rabbits. You can also contact The Division of Wildlife at 330-644-2293.

Tim Tesmer, Stine Road Resident

MORE HISTORY

Jodi Padrutt wrote to say she enjoyed the story on Arthur Conger in last month’s YCN but adds let's give the women some due! His wife, Emily, was just as much a visionary and founded the local Cuyahoga Portage Chapter of the DAR (Barb Morehouse and Jodi are members).

Jodi said before they built their house on Stine Road Fenton Reighley (next door) allowed Terry and some friends to metal detect. They found a pair of Civil War brass breastplates in his yard!

Jodi provided the following information on Emily Bronson Conger (1847-1917):

Emily was a granddaughter of Herman Bronson who founded the village of Peninsula, Ohio. She married Col. Arthur Latham Conger in 1865 upon his discharge from the Union Army. They would have three sons, Kenyon B., Arthur W. and Latham H. Conger. Arthur Conger was a farmer before the Civil War and became an Akron Industrialist afterward. He was elected Summit County Treasurer and Emily took the post of Deputy County Treasurer. This was in a time when women did not have the right to vote. She was also a music lover. She also volunteered often at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Emily was a member of several organizations such as The Dames of the Loyal Legion, the Order of the Eastern Star and the Women's Relief Corps. Emily began the Cuyahoga Portage Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. After Arthur's death in 1899, Emily went to school in Missouri to study osteopathy and was one of the only women in the country to receive a degree in this field. She went on to become vice president of the American Assoc., of Osteopathy. She wrote a book called, "An Ohio Woman in the Philippines, which told the story of her travels there to help American Soldiers and civilians."

THANK YOU TO DR. RON WOLF

Thanks to Dr. Ron Wolf (Summit Endodontics) of Stine Road for a refreshing and pleasant first root canal. I had only minor discomfort once the drugs wore off and managed not to bite myself while I was numb. The next day I went to Vino Italia at The Civic Theater where I ate, drank, kissed, hug and chatted like a Roman.

Anne Marie Griffith
