PENINSULA COUNCIL

The Peninsula Village Council met in regular session on December 12. The meeting was preceded by a public hearing on a proposed Zoning Ordinance concerning sandwich boards. The Chamber of Commerce had a lot of input in preparing the legislation.

The Council voted to enter into a contract with the City of Stow Building Department to provide approval and inspection services to the Village residents. Previously, the Summit County Building Department provided these services. A contract with the Summit County Public Defender’s Office for services for the next year was also approved.

Council was also informed that the Police Department will replace one cruiser in 2012 and authorized them to look into various lease options for the new vehicle.

Mayor Fisher announced the appointment of Mike Matusz to the Board of Zoning Appeals. He will replace Grover Miller. Council also confirmed the reappointment of Richard Slocum to the Fire Board.

Council was presented with information from Summit County concerning joining with their group to provide health insurance benefits to the Village employees. Council will consider the matter after getting more information.

Meetings coming up at the Village Hall:
Regular Session of Council January 9th at 7:00 P.M.
Board of Zoning Appeals January 12th at 7:00 P.M.

BOSTON TOWNSHIP TRASH SERVICE CHANGES

Effective February 1, 2012 your rate for residential solid waste and recycling service will be reduced from $48.00 to $44.82 per quarter. On that date Kimble (formally J&J Refuse) will begin a new contract with Boston Township supplying each home with a 96 gallon two wheeled cart to contain their solid waste. The carts are easy to handle, animal resistant and on collection day they are to be wheeled to the road. Excess solid waste that does not fit in the cart can be placed next to the cart for collection on your service day. Please place your recycling bin a couple feet away from cart.

Delivery of the cart to your home will be sometime in mid- January and instructions on their use will be attached to the cart. We ask that each residence try using the cart and if after a period of time you are not satisfied we will make arrangements to collect the cart. Remember there is no extra charge to use the cart, it is being provided to assist in keeping our collection costs in line and enable us to keep your cost per quarter for service in line as well.

PENINSULA UMC REACHES OUT TO HELP HAITI

The Peninsula United Methodist Church’s Outreach Committee is proud to announce it will participate in its first ever International Mission Trip! Two PUMC members, along with 18 other people from Buffalo, Pittsburgh and Cuyahoga Falls, will be departing on January 28th, 2012 for Port au Prince, Haiti.

This trip has an ‘education’ theme. The focus will be on providing astronomy and science curricula, art and music after school programs, as well as bible lessons for the Haitian children. Adults will have the opportunity to receive musical coaching and to learn basic first aid. The main emphasis will be on providing demonstrations on how to use water filtration kits to generate clean, safe, drinkable water. The Mission Group will be carrying as many water filtration kits and educational supplies as their luggage can hold.

This is where your help is needed! PUMC invites you to help a Haitian family obtain safe, clean water by funding a water filtration kit. Each kit could provide a lifetime of drinkable water for an entire family and only costs $40. You can also donate any amount toward the purchase of much needed school supplies. One hundred percent of your donation will go toward the kits and supplies, all of which will be hand delivered by Loretta and David in January!

For more information, please see the church website at PeninsulaUMC.org. To make a donation, mail to:

We thank you for any help you can provide.

FORMER RESIDENT SERVING IN THE PEACE CORPS

Evan Delahanty, who grew up in the area, is currently living in Suriname – formerly Dutch Guyana, serving in the Peace Corps. He arrived there in May and will be serving through July, 2013. His mission is community and youth development in the village of Pikin Slee (google-able!) and he is currently working on projects involving river access piers, adult educational programs, tourism/business activities – and one involving soccer as an educational tool. This is dear to his heart, as he played Woodridge Recreational League soccer from the time he was 5!

In a recent e-mail, Evan wrote: “Peace Corps is currently trying to raise money to buy a slew of “One World Futbols” to use in a business education program that focuses on teaching soft work/life skills through sports-inspired games. Every Peace Corps Volunteer in Suriname has gone through the initial stages of training in the curriculum and plan to roll it out with the youth groups, schools, etc. that Volunteers work with all over the country. This is a project which will benefit almost every village in Suriname with a Volunteer and I can tell you that my village is already set up and ready to go - I've already started a youth group and we are chugging along well, though supplies really help! Check it out here: https://www.peacecorps.gov/index.cfm?shell=donate.contribute.projDetail&projdesc=568-133.

These blue balls are tough - so tough that lions can chew on them, trucks can squish them, and - hopefully - kids in 3rd world environments can play soccer and other games with them without busting. Video of a lion playing with the ball: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9su83Pxrmc&noredirect=1. The company that makes them also has a program to donate one for each one purchased, so if you are looking for a soccer ball, go to http://www.oneworldfutbol.com/.

``THE CROWNING TOUCH``

The Boston Township Hall Committee Inc., a 501c3 organization was formed in 1992 as a means to help the township save the then condemned Peninsula High School (The Boston Township Hall). Under a lease agreement with Boston Township, the BTHC is fully responsible for the restoration, maintenance, operation and upkeep of this building. Through various grants, monetary gifts from friends and neighbors, monies from a 1983 voter referendum and from rental use of the building, restoration is near completion.

As many of you may already know, a campaign has been launched by the BTHC to raise funds to help put a slate roof on the building. The original roof of the 1887 structure was of slate. Quotes have been received for the project which when finished is estimated to last 100 years.

Any donation to help put the “crowning touch” on the beautifully restored Boston Township Hall would be greatly appreciated.

Donations can be mailed to BTHC, PO Box 145, Peninsula 44264. All donations are tax deductible.
